The evolution of Slushii [Exclusive cover interview]
What a month it’s been for our cover star Slushii. It brought one of the most crucial and important moments of his career: the release of ‘ELE (Extinguishing Level Event)’ by Monstercat. The culmination of years and years of hard work, it showcases the growth of his sound and who he is as an artist, becoming a multi-faceted, multi-genre mastermind, even though dubstep is deeply rooted in every fiber of his being. Champion of his sound, Slushii joins us this month to talk about the album and its sequel.
Hi Slushii, thanks for joining us this month! Congratulations are certainly in order for you as you unleash ‘ELE (Extinction Level Event)’ on the world. The album took many years to prepare, how does it feel to finally see it officially released in the world?
“I really feel like I’ve laid a solid foundation for what a Slushii album could look like. I used to say “would”, but now it’s actually in the ether, so it feels good. I’ve waited three years to tell my story and now that the time has come, I can’t hold back!
The new album is very different from your previous albums like “Out of Light”, for example. In a way, would you say that all of your previous releases with the Slushii project have led to this moment? How would you compare past albums to this one?
“I would say in terms of anime; it’s right after the shonen time skip, where the main character goes to train for a long time and returns to Sage mode. It was a truly humbling experience to have to start from scratch with the project, as far as the lost momentum of the staggered releases goes.
As an Anime fan, there’s no doubt that this style definitely influenced the overall visual style and story of ‘ELE (Extinction Level Event)” and has done so in past projects as well. Can you tell us more about the story behind this album and how you plan to incorporate your love for anime into future projects?
“This album is the genesis of many visual media and passion projects coming to life at such a rapid pace. ‘ELE’ is a coming-of-age tale that is my official battle cry on the electronic scene. Slushii is back in action, and I’m here to stay.
