Assistant professor in illustration and graphic narration (PR0492/21-22)
Founded in 2005, the Academy of Visual Arts (AVA) is the first of its kind in Hong Kong. The Academy is committed to providing the best visual arts education to meet the needs of the region’s cultural and creative industries. In the eventful years since its founding, the Academy has grown and developed rapidly, building up an international team of teachers and developing multi-faceted interactive programs based on an advanced and adaptive interdisciplinary curriculum.
The incumbent will teach illustration and graphic storytelling through a range of traditional and contemporary approaches, covering the areas of book and magazine illustrations, comics and graphic novels, cartoons and caricature, as well as potentially other more experimental approaches. He/she must have built up a significant body of relevant work demonstrating an individual and evolving vocabulary for expression through illustration in the wider realm of graphic communication. An extensive network of local, regional and international artist/designer connections in illustration and related fields will be considered an added advantage. Conceptual strengths, contextual sensitivities and a multidisciplinary orientation are considered essential and should be documented in the portfolio. A high level of operational skills is expected.
Applicants should hold a master’s or doctoral degree in a relevant discipline, have accumulated academic teaching experience, and have established a strong record in professional practice and research in these and/or other fields related fields. Additionally, they should have a good knowledge of the contemporary visual arts scene in Hong Kong and the region, and familiarity with broader issues and trends in education. Candidates should also be able to link visual arts education with other professional disciplines and facilitate the teaching of visual arts in an academic environment.
The initial appointment will be on a fixed term contract of two to three years. Further renewal is subject to mutual agreement and availability of funds.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
