The detailed schedule for the election of the Congress president is expected to be released within the next three to four days, party sources said on Monday.
The party’s electoral authority said it would stick to the timetable for electing a new leader by September 20.
Chairman of the party’s Central Election Authority, Madhusudan Mistry, had said that it was up to the Congress Working Committee (CWC) to approve the final date for the election of the Congress leader but “on our side, we we are ready”.
“The timetable for the election of the president of Congress is expected to be released in the next 3-4 days. It would contain the detailed timetable with the dates for submitting nominations and withdrawing,” a senior source said.
The question on every Congress leader’s mind is whether Rahul Gandhi will agree to lead the party again or not.
After a crucial meeting of its working committee, the Congress announced last October that the election of the new President of the Congress would be held between August 21 and September 20 this year.
Rahul Gandhi had resigned as President of Congress after the party suffered its second consecutive defeat in the 2019 parliamentary elections. Sonia Gandhi who took over the reins of the party as interim president had also proposed to resign in August 2020 after an open revolt of a section. leaders, referred to as G-23, but the CWC had urged her to continue.
There have been several calls from leaders publicly urging Rahul Gandhi to return as party leader, but uncertainty and suspense continue to hang over the enigma of the party’s presidency.
