Dragon Ball Super Artist Brings Back Super Android 13 in New Artwork

Super Android 13 shows off its massive muscles in a new work by Toyotarou, the artist behind Akira Toriyama Dragon Ball Super manga series.

The awesome character illustration was posted on the official site in English for the dragonball franchise with the caption “One day I would like to see all the Android models that have never appeared in the [mainline] series –Toyotarou.” The character debuted in the 1992 animated film Awesome Android 13!, which is the seventh film under the Dragon Ball Z banner and the tenth of the entire franchise.

Along with all other androids, Android 13 was created by Dr. Gero of the Red Ribbon Army as revenge against Goku for defeating the organization in his youth. Throughout the story, Android 13 takes “the computer chips and reactors of Androids 14 and 15 to transform and power up”, becoming a crushing adversary who manages to defeat Piccolo, Vegeta and Future Trunks. However, Goku ultimately manages to defeat the super villain by absorbing the power of a Spirit Bomb and punching him directly in the chest.

Although the appearance of Android 13 itself is unlikely, the Red Ribbon Army and two new deadly android warriors are confirmed as the antagonists of the next film, Dragon Ball Super: Super heroes. According to early plot summaries, the story will primarily focus on the master-student relationship between Piccolo and Gohan. Their relationship has been featured in recent promotional material for the film; fans got a glimpse inside the home of the asocial and aloof green alien. One of the objects highlighted in space is a stuffed animal that was given to Piccolo.

Other fan-favorite characters like Goku, Bulma, Pan, Trunks, Android 18, Goten, and even Broly are also set to appear in Dragon Ball Super: Super heroes and several of them received new designs for the film. Additionally, many fans have speculated that Super hero will feature the return of one of the franchise’s most iconic and infamous villains: Dr. Gero’s perfect android, Cell. The rumors were mostly fueled by what appears to be Cell’s leg in a promotional screenshot posted in V jumpthe Shounen jump spin-off magazine where Dragon Ball Super is serialized.

Dragon Ball Super: Super heroes set to debut in Japan on June 11; it will air later this summer in North America, Latin America, Europe, Australia/New Zealand, Africa, the Middle East and other Asian countries.
