Olivia Newton-John may not be around to sing “Let’s Get Physical” anymore, but Christie Brinkley is still happy to spread the word, 40 years after the exercise craze of the ’80s. On Monday, the former model shared a photo from 1982 Los Angeles Magazine cover on Instagram in which she rocked bright blue spandex and touted the must-have fitness equipment she still swears by today at 68: the Total Gym. Needless to say, fans loved the throwback photo.
“Muscle memory! 😜,” she captioned the post. “It’s Monday…let’s get physical! Starting the week with exercise energizes me and helps me focus on what I’m doing. want to accomplish in the coming week.
She continued, “It’s been raining here so I’ll be jumping on my rainy day go-to for 25 years @totalgymdirect! This blanket was 40 years ago, and I can still fit into this leotard 😜.
The magazine’s cover called Brinkley “shaper upper of the year,” which honestly still rings true 40 years later.
“Christie now you are The Shaper Upper of the last four decades!!! 🥇🏆,” one person commented. “Aaah the 80s….Jane Fonda workouts were my jam 😉,” another added. “I’m glad we had this fitness craze because it was so important to maintain the physical body with daily hard work,” someone else wrote.
Brinkley is super passionate about moving daily to stay strong and flexible or, as she puts it, “move it or rust!” She loves her Total Gym, of course, but if it’s in a “natural setting,” she wrote on Instagram in March, she’d rather train outdoors, whether in the form of a bike ride, a walk or a dip in the ocean.
“I always try to make exercise fun because if it’s not fun you probably won’t stick with it,” she captioned a video of her morning laps. “I really like swimming along the shore with fins and goggles on and then working out a different set of muscles by swimming without fins. I think the more chaotic the world gets, the more important it is to find ways to relax your mind and your body.
She also follows a “rainbow diet” and drinks her own Bellissima organic prosecco to cut down on sugar when looking for a drink. Most importantly, she approaches each day with gratitude to age gracefully. “Forget anti-aging this and all that,” she said People in April. “It really is a question of gratitude.
