Rokeshia Renne Ashley is from Miami and mother of his daughter, Emery. Dr. Ashley’s research focuses on health communication in body image and modification, and maternal health. She examines how black women manage their appearance in relation to the receipt of health information and negotiate modification within a racial and health context, while exploring the interactions between patients and health care providers before, during and after childbirth to uncover culturally competent strategies to improve black women’s and infants’ maternal mortality. To date, Dr. Ashley’s work has been published in Health Communication, Journal of Black Studiesand Communication, Culture & Criticism. His research has been shared publicly by Black Enterprise, NBC News, US News & World Report, the Chicago Tribune, Columbia Missourian (in print and online), Allure Magazine, Red Lake Nation News, and more. Ashley has presented numerous papers at academic conferences such as the International Communication Association, National Association for African American Studies conferences, and has accepted an academic invitation to speak about her research in South Africa. Dr Ashley is also the author of a children’s book Child Sunflower.
